Unicorn Artwork
Unicorn artwork depicts the many different forms of this
mythological creature. Single-horned animals have been referenced in
art and mythology in many different cultural areas. Ancient Greek writers
of natural history wrote of these creatures as though they were real.
The earliest images which can be associated with unicorn artwork are
depictions upon seals from the Indus Valley Civilization. It is possible
that these animals were actually two horned animals drawn in profile.
A lot of possible single-horned animal images from ancient Mesopotamia
are hard to interpret for this same reason.
Modern unicorn artwork simply involves a horse with a horn upon its
head. However, the traditional Western mythological animal has many
other distinguishing features. These include cloven hoofs, the tale
of a lion, and a billy goat’s beard.
